Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland
Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland was established as a registered charity in Scotland (No SC18224) in December 1996. The principal aim of the charity is to provide access to and develop awareness of music therapy across Scotland.
To achieve this it employs 16 staff, of which 14 are music therapists (6 full time and 8 part time), an administrator based at its registered office in Lasswade and a fundraising coordinator based in Glasgow. It is the only independent provider of music therapy services, and the largest employer of qualified music therapy practitioners in Scotland.
The music therapy team works from three bases in Lasswade (Midlothian), Crosshill (Fife) and Govan (Glasgow). The work carried out is largely done on an outreach basis in schools, hospitals, residential health care settings, and community / voluntary sector projects. A small number of private referrals are also undertaken in the workrooms at its three bases. The team’s outreach work takes it into the Lothians, Borders, Fife, Glasgow, Stirling, Lanarkshire, Dunbartonshire and Perth & Kinross.
In a typical school term week in 2007, the therapists work with around 250 children and adults for both group and individual sessions. This figure includes individuals with a wide range of special needs including autistic spectrum disorders, learning disability, profound and multiple disabilities, those with mental health problems, people suffering from dementia, and those in palliative care.
Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland is greatly involved with the delivery of the MSc in Music Therapy (Nordoff-Robbins) training programme which started at Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh in September 2005. The course has recently relocated to Queen Margaret University’s new campus in Musselburgh.
